John Roger Briscoe, age 83, of Pensacola, Florida, made his transition peacefully at home on June 11, 2020. A Celebration of Roger’s Life will be held at 11:00 am on July 11, 2020 at Unity of Pensacola, 716 North 9th Ave, Pensacola, FL 32501 with Rev. Jamie Sanders officiating. Roger was born in Mineola, NY to Jack & Carrie Briscoe. He grew up in the Northeast, living in many places around New York City, Boston, Cape Cod and areas of Northern New Jersey. He graduated high school in Mountain Lakes, NJ and received his Textile degree from North Carolina State University (NCSU) in Raleigh, NC. Roger met and married Rebecca (Becky) Ann Grady of Kenansville, NC on July 9, 1960. After college, they moved to Denville, NJ near his parents when Roger began working as a Buyer for JC Penney’s in New York City. The family later moved to Norwich, NY (upstate) when Roger was hired to work for Norwich Mills (textiles) in marketing and production. Roger had the opportunity to work with Charles Shultz, transferring the famous images (Charlie Brown/Peanuts) to shirts and sweatshirts. Additionally, one of Roger’s shirt creations (The Pink Pussycat) even made it to the cover of Cosmopolitan Magazine in 1970. When Champion, Inc. acquired Norwich Mills, Roger was transferred back South to Clayton, NC (near Raleigh) as a Plant Manager, with the family settling in Smithfield, NC. As the textile industry changed, the family relocated to Charlotte, NC in 1974, then to Galax, VA (off the Blue Ridge Parkway) and finally to Raleigh, NC where they established themselves in Knightdale, NC in the early 1990's. With changes in the textile industry and productions being moved overseas, Roger retired from textiles and began working with the Raleigh-Durham Airport in the shuttling department for several years before joining his wife, Becky at Corporate Support Systems (drug testing company). Both Roger & Becky retired together in 2005, enjoying entertaining around their swimming pool, traveling to Civil War Battlefields, and camping with Maggie & George Clark. Roger delighted in restoring antique cars (Model A’s to MG’s), Sunday drives in his car/truck of the moment, classical music, Broadway Musicals, Civil War & WWII History (he watched the bombers leave the USA on way to Europe during WWII as a boy), gardening, and especially cheering on the Wolfpack of NCSU and whomever was playing against the UNC Tarheels. He was always an avid reader. After the diagnosis of the onset of Alzheimer’s, Roger decided in 2012 that the final move would be to Pensacola, FL (including Tricia) in order to be closer to his son, Bob (Suzie & Brittney) and so that the entire family could face the future together. Roger loved Pensacola with its rich military history, the Naval Air Museum, the beaches and of course “the scenery” provided by the beaches. Memories of Roger will be cherished by his wife Becky, his son John Robert (Bob) Briscoe (wife Suzie, daughter Brittney), his daughter Patricia Ann (Tricia) Briscoe (wife Janet Keiser), his Sister Jacklyne (Jackie) Romanker (husband Len), Sister-in-Law Margaret (Maggie) Clark, and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Covenant Hospice Care or the Alzheimer’s Association. The family thanks the workers of Covenant Hospice Care for their kind attention during his last months. We are all very grateful that Roger was able to remain in his home surrounded by Love from his family & furry friends.
