Obituary of Joan S. Crummey

Joan Sadler Hatch Satterwhite Crummey left us to go home on June 10, 2018. Joan was born November 27, 1933 in Ensley, Alabama to Virginia Sadler. Joan moved to Pensacola in 1963. She worked at Harris Concrete and purchased the company after the death of the owner. She sold the company in 1986 and moved to the North Carolina Mountains. There she worked with developmentally delayed adults and started the domestic violence program for Mitchell County. Joan then returned to Pensacola and worked for ARC Gateway. She said that she received as much love and joy from her group home women and fellow employees as her heart could hold. In the course of her lifetime, Joan was a member of the National Association of Women in Construction, Pilot Club of Greater Pensacola, Carriage Hills Women’s Golf Association, Osceola Women’s Club, West Pensacola Chamber of Commerce, Florida Septic Tank Association and the Home Builders and General Contractors Association. She was appointed by two governors to the West Florida Regional Planning Council and to the Youth Employment Program Escambia County. She is preceded in death by her children, Debra Lynn Satterwhite Saujon and William “Butch” Satterwhite; her grandson, Marcus Andre Saujon and one sister, Helen Hatch Deloach. She is survived by a sister, Janice Jackson Harris and five nieces and nephews. Joan leaves behind two friends of over 40 years, Ellen Shular and Dottie Rapp. Dottie’s family adopted her and saw that no holiday passed without them showing her their affection. She also leaves the “zilchers”, Ann, Ava, Jan, Hilda, Dottie and their token male, Rick. Joan will be cremated and placed between her children along with her mother and grandson. In her own words, “What a life I have had. Many schools, many homes, many states, many husbands, many clubs and many, many friends. Much heartache but much more joy.” Requiescat in pace, Joan. You will be missed.
