Obituary of Johnnie Sue Holcomb

Sue Holcomb (Johnnie Sue Jones) left us on May 5, 2023. She was born 93 years ago in a
logging town, Barth, Mississippi, to Arnold and Nettie Jones. She is preceded in death by her
husband of 63 years Gene Holcomb, brothers Paul, James, Maurice and Marvin Jones and
sons Richard and Jeffrey Holcomb. She is survived by her sister Patt Gilly and children David
(Kathy) Holcomb, Carol Herndon, Karen (Roy) Smith and Linda (Randy) Bullock, as well as 10
grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
Sue had a fascinating life, having been born in a house with no indoor plumbing and culminating
with the 10 years she and Gene lived in a beautiful beach house they built on Little Sabine Bay.
You might say she went from outhouses to beach houses in the span of her years.
She and Gene met in Gulfport MS when she was a senior in high school and he was enjoying
civilian life after the end of WW2. Their life was an authentic love story. She will be remembered
by all who knew her as a truly strong, loving, faithful and gracious Southern lady, with all the
hospitality, great food, sweet tea and wonderful family gatherings that implies.
Visitation will begin at 10:30 May 22nd at Little Flower Catholic Church with Mass of Christian
Burial at 11:00 at Little Flower Catholic Church, officiated by Bishop Martin Holley. Interment wil
follow at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Pensacola.
