Obituary of Betty Jo Hataway

Betty Joannah Hataway, 89, of Niceville, Florida passed away peacefully on September 3rd, 2023.  Betty was born in Worthington Springs, Florida on October 16th, 1933 to John and Elsie Reaves.  She graduated from Niceville School in 1951, where she played basketball and was the class treasurer.  She married her second, and absolute best, husband Randal Hataway in 1974.  She worked as the head cashier for many years at the Piggly Wiggly before she moved to Child's Drugstore where she retired after 19 years.  She loved cooking, hauling in big catfish, spoiling her great-granddogs, playing dominoes and rummikub, and having large family gatherings for holidays and birthdays, where her famous banana pudding was always a staple.

Betty is survived by her children, Levi Griffin (Kathy), Greg Griffin, Judy Griffin, and John Griffin; step-sons, Randy Hataway and Jeff (Lan) Hataway; 11 grandchildren, numerous great and great-great grandchildren, and an abundance of other relatives.  She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Elsie Reaves; husband, Randal Hataway; sisters, Earline Rice and Geraldine Friar; brothers, Maines Reaves and Wyatt Reaves; step-daughter, Brenda Mitchell; and daughters-in-law, Sherry Griffin, Vikki Griffin, and Dorothy Hataway.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of the Manor at Bluewater Bay, the hospice nurses and staff at Vitas Healthcare, and Betty's wonderful friend and roommate, Lyn Helms.  The love, kindness, and compassion shown for Betty and our family will never be forgotten.

A Celebration of Life, with food and drinks provided, will be held at the Niceville Senior Center, located at 201 Campbell Drive in Niceville, Florida on October 15th, 2023 from 1-3pm.  In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Betty's name to a charity of your choice.
