Obituary of Salvatore N Barranca
Salvatore N. Barranca passed away September 16, 2023. He died peacefully at home in Navarre, Florida, surrounded by his wife Susan and his sons Vincenzo and Antonio.
Torre was born in Washington D.C. to Salvatore (“Sam”) and Ida Barranca. He graduated Valedictorian from his beloved DeMatha Catholic School in 1968, and attended University of Maryland on a full scholarship in Math. Although also offered a scholarship to attend Law School, he instead took over his father’s small printing business, which was struggling at the time. As CEO, Torre turned it into a successful multi-media company (“Immedia”) with over 300 employees and a state-of-the art manufacturing and production facility. During this time, he was also a single dad to his two sons, Vincenzo and Antonio, the ‘Three Amigos’.
Torre was active in conservative circles in Washington DC, supported DeMatha High School’s mission to “create Faith-Filled Gentlemen and Scholars”, and was a devoted friend to his small circle of friends. He enjoyed racquetball, golf, and skiing, and had a love/hate relationship with the care and manicuring of his lawn. He had an uncanny ability to spot 4-leaf clovers.
Torre enjoyed extending hospitality at his home, and the after-dinner cigars and conversations in his library were legendary. He was an avid traveller, back-packing through Greece and the Greek islands during his college years, and sailing the Caribbean with friends for milestone birthdays. Paris, Ireland, and Villa Montana (in Puerto Rico) were in close competition for his favorite trips later in life. Two destinations still on his wishlist were Heidelberg and Israel. Initially raised Catholic, Torre became a born-again follower of Jesus Christ just after Christmas of 2004. It changed his life.
Torre married again in 2005, to Susan Marble, and together they built a new family home: The Greenwood, in Harwood Maryland. There, Torre raised the hound of his heart, Luther (a Scottish Deerhound). Many years later, after dealing several years with what was at the time a mystery illness, Torre and Susan relocated in 2021 to Navarre, Florida, to be closer to his sons. In Navarre, Torre joined Live Oak Church and was active in men’s ministry and with a small group that met weekly for dinner, Bible study, and encouragement.
Torre is survived by his wife, Susan; sons, Vincenzo (wife Patricia, and children Mya, Lucius, Ava, and Marcello ) and Antonio (wife Jill, and children Torre and Ella); sister Josephine (“Jody”) Tata (and her family: husband Pat, and children Samantha and PJ, and their families); cousins, Deborah, Donna, Denise, Jack, Nick, Batista, and John (who was like a brother to him); stepchildren, TJ Panik (and his family) and Jennifer Panik Vancek (and her family); parents-in-law, Joy and Steve Huffines; father-in-law, David W. Marble; brothers-in-law, David and Tom (“TF” - and his wife, sister-in-law Renee).
A Celebration of Torre’s life will be held first in Navarre at 2 pm on Saturday, October 28th, at Live Oak Church, 7304 East Bay Boulevard, Navarre, FL 32566.
A second Celebration will be held in Annapolis Maryland at 2 pm on Sunday, November 12, at Bay Area Community Church, 884 Chesterfield Road, Annapolis, MD.
