Obituary of John Eugene Cook
Mr. John Eugene Cook, 91 of Pensacola, Florida, passed away Friday January 19, 2024.
John was born on April 14, 1932 in Philadelphia, PA. He moved to Pensacola when his dad was transferred with the United States Navy in 1945 where he attended Pensacola High School and met his future wife. During his junior year at PHS his father was transferred to Honolulu, HI where he graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1950. He returned to Pensacola as soon as he could to marry the love of his life on July 3, 1952. He retired from the Naval Aviation Depot in 1990.
John is survived by his beautiful wife, Dona “Charline” Cook. Together, they raised 3 children, Don Cook (Sally), Tana Greathouse (Gerald) and Todd Cook (Brenda). They have 6 grandchildren, Jackie Weis (Rob), Jamie Pochel, Dawn Holzworth (Matt), Corey Walls (David), Evan Cook and Logan Cook, 13 great-grandchildren as well as nephews and nieces, Dean Guerrero (Kathy), Dawn Wygal (Todd), Rich Donley (Kelly) along with great nephews and nieces. John deeply loved his family and was lovingly referred to as “Papa John”.
John was a member of Olive Baptist church where he was active in Sunday School and also volunteered in the baptistry ministry, the resource center and served as a greeter. In his younger years he coached a church softball team through the Exchange Park and then later in the over 50 league. He was an avid reader, lover of sports, enjoyed classic movies and the occasional crossword puzzle. He was proud to be a member of the Republican Party and he loved his country. He served in the submarine service of the United States Navy.
A military funeral will be held at Barrancas National Cemetery February 1, 2024 at 1030.
