Obituary of Sharon Covett Mingus

Sharon "Covett" (Todd) Mingus, 67, was born in Manchester, TN to Neioda "Nikki" and Clifton Todd on October 4, 1957.  Covett moved with her sisters; Deborah "Debbie" and Cindy, and her father to Nashville, TN when she was nine.

Soon she had a new step-sister; Mary “Scottie”, and a new step-mother.  It wasn't long before the family had a new half-sister; Melissa.

In Nashville, she made many friends and graduated from Pearl High School in 1976.  She worked in fast-food for a brief time until finding a job in an insurance office.

On June 11, 1983, she married John "JB" Mingus in Higgins, Texas, and her lovely smile and open, warm, caring heart won the love of every Mingus family member.  She also became a Navy wife and did a fabulous job of making a house a home in California, Washington, Tennessee, Texas, and finally Oklahoma, before moving to Florida shortly before her passing.

She was great at making ends meet.  JB would joke with her that "she could squeeze a nickel and get back two dimes."  She was excellent at keeping the family finances in order.

Covett and JB were blessed with two healthy sons; John "Byron" II and Nicholas "Nick" Todd Mingus.  She chose to stay at home and raise the boys and concentrate on her passion for anything "crafts".  Anything she saw, she was thinking of how she could repurpose it into some kind of craft.

She was gifted in this field- she painted beautiful pictures, cross-stitched, beaded, and could make something beautiful from what seemed nothing to most people.

For several years, knitting was her favorite and always something to keep her hands busy.  The whole family will attest to that since everyone would get a blanket or a comforter or a scarf or "several of each".

Covett always thought of everyone else before she thought of herself.  She was very giving and as her sister Cindy said,  "Covett had the biggest, kindest heart.  If she could, she would do anything to help someone else.  She was the best sister growing up (even if she told on me for something I did)".

Her great-niece Kalli said,  "She loved each and every one of the family and she had a way of making you ‘feel’ that love.  She was always so kind and sweet."

At a young age, Covett was introduced to the beach and fell in love with anything involving the beach and the water.  Her mother moved to Florida in 1988, so there were many family vacations to visit "Nanny" where Covett instilled the love of the beach into her immediate family.

Later as her sons grew-up, Byron married, and Covett and JB were blessed with grandchildren.  Three beautiful girls; Hailey, McKenzie, Serenity, and the "All-boy" grandson Brantley.

When the grandkids would visit, Covett's (now Grammy's) eyes would light-up and she would almost burst with the love she had for each one of them.  She loved each of you with all her heart and always will.  Grammy is watching over you from Heaven now.

After her Mom "Nikki" passed, Covett and JB were able to purchase the Florida house but weren't able to move to Florida just yet.  Now the dream was to move to Florida and retire-"Preferably spending everday at the Beach!"

Life sometimes has a way of delaying things and putting higher priorities in the way of achieving your dreams-so it was for Covett and JB.

Covett was one of the strongest-willed, toughest, yet tender and loving people I have known but she fell ill with a long-term illness.  The promise still remained to get her to Florida.

We finally were able to move and she was so happy to be here.  Her sister, Debbie, came over and visited with her the whole day when we arrived.  We had finally made it to Florida where she wanted to be.

The Almighty Lord has a plan for everything and for all of us and He must have wanted her to get here too, because she passed peacefully into His hands on October 25, 2024 shortly after she arrived in Florida.

Covett is no longer in pain. She can breathe easily without the help of medical equipment, and is rejoicing with the friends and family that have passed to the Lord before her.  She is waiting to be re-united with the loved ones she left behind.  We can't wait to see that beautiful smile and feel those loving arms in a hug making us "feel" the love you have always shown.

Covett was always fun to be around-whether it was as a teenager sun-bathing at the pool and the DJ telling you to turn every 30 minutes, riding in the car singing along with the radio, finding that "perfect" shell at Allan Davis Seashells & Souvenirs (if you didn't find it on the beach), or just the way she made every family gathering special.

Sharon "Covett" (Todd) Mingus was preceeded in death by her mother Neioda "Gambrell" Wilson; her father Clifton Leon Todd; and many relatives, in-laws, and friends.

Covett is survived by her husband of 41 years, John "JB" Mingus (Milton, FL); sons John Byron Mingus II (Enid, OK), Nicholas Todd Mingus (Milton, FL); Four grandchildren (Hailey, McKenzie, Serenity, and Brantley)

Her sisters; Debbie Carpenter and husband Kerry (Pensacola, FL), Cindy Todd (Montgomery, AL), Melissa Cokely and husband Wayne (Norman, OK); step-sister Mary Scott Smith of Tennessee; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and friends.

Memorial services will be announced separately to family members and friends at a future date.

Covett

To My beautiful, loving, strong, and wonderful wife that has been the wind beneath so many people's wings.

You will be missed more than mere words can express but knowing you are no longer in pain and that you are in Heaven makes it "somewhat" easier to continue on until we are together again.

To paraphrase a quote from one of your favorite romance movies.

"I Loved you yesterday

I Love you today

And I'll Love you tomorrow

I'll Love you Forever

It was Always YOU!"
