Obituary of Elizabeth Mahler Sackman
Elizabeth Delia Mahler Sackman died November 8, 2024. She was preceded in death by her husband, BMCM Louis Sackman Jr., her father, Joseph Mahler, her mother, Margaret Berg Mahler Coppen, and her beloved Aunt Mary Mahler and Uncle Gene Mahler.
She is survived by her eight children: Cheryl, Louis (Livia), Eric (Julie), Paul, David (Lisa), Marc (Christine), Mary (Glen) Henry, and Neil (Lori), 17 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
Betty was a homemaker and mother. As her children grew older she worked outside the home – first as a member of the opening crew of the Red Lobster in Cordova Mall, then as a member of the staff of Creighton Road Nursery, a job she truly loved.
She was also a relentless volunteer. She baked cakes and cookies to raise funds for the Navy Wives Club, knitted hundreds of new baby layettes for the Navy Relief Society, volunteered at their thrift shops, served as a Gray Lady volunteer at the Navy Hospital in Pensacola, and helped administer eye examinations for the Escambia County School District when her children were students there.
A stubborn, tough-as-nails girl from the mean streets of Jersey City, Betty was country at heart. She loved music and she loved to work in her yard and garden, sharing her plants and her knowledge with anyone who was interested.
Betty taught her children to stand up for themselves, and to lift others up with them. That is her greatest legacy.
Services will be private. Interment will be in Barrancas National Cemetery at NAS Pensacola.
